President's Welcome Letter

Welcome to AMATYC!

Welcome to the website of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC).  It is my honor to be serving as president of an organization that had its beginnings in 1974.  While I was sitting through my Calculus class in high school, a group of visionaries met in New York City to "form an organization which will be the national voice of two-year college mathematics teachers."  A year later, the fundamental purposes of the association were established:  to provide a national forum for the exchange of ideas to further develop and improve the mathematics education of students in two-year colleges, to coordinate activities of affiliated organizations on a national level, and to promote the professional development and welfare of its members (see the History of AMATYC 1974-1999).

Fast forward 43 years, and AMATYC still is concerned with improving mathematics that is taught in the first  two years of college, we have 44 affiliate organizations, and there is a wealth of professional development opportunities available for our members.

Our current strategic plan (2012-2017) has the following priorities:

  • Priority I – Provide professional development opportunities to all two-year college faculty.
  • Priority II – Promote research on student learning in two-year colleges.
  • Priority III – Promote the review and improvement of two-year college mathematics curricula.
  • Priority IV – Build and promote communities of educators in lower division collegiate mathematics across departments and institutions.
  • Priority V – Communicate the vision, core values, mission, and goals of AMATYC and promote awareness of the organization.

These priorities help guide the AMATYC board steer our organization forward.

I attended my first AMATYC conference in 1992 in Indianapolis, Indiana and have been at every conference since.  I have learned a lot, grown as a professional, and picked up teaching strategies to use in my classroom. The networking with colleagues is definitely my favorite part of the conference.  AMATYC's vision statement is "Opening Doors Through Mathematics" and I must say that I have made the most of the opportunities that have been made available to me by seeing where the open doors lead.

Members of AMATYC are already aware of the great opportunities available to them.  In addition to the annual conference, be sure to check out:

  • Webinars and Traveling Workshops
  • Our peer-reviewed journal The MathAMATYC Educator and our newsletter AMATYC News
  • Our standards documents Crossroads in Mathematics and Beyond Crossroads
  • Position statements
  • Our eight academic committees which are active throughout the year
  • Four new AMATYC networks (ANets) - a network that has a focus that fits in with AMATYC's mission
  • Past conference proceedings

There are many benefits of being a member of AMATYC.  It isn't too late to become a member so that you can start to enjoy them!

The next annual conference will be held November 9-12, 2017 in San Diego, California.  Please make plans to have a  "Prime Time" in San Diego!  I look forward to seeing you there!
