Project Coordinator

Christy Hediger
Lehigh Carbon Community College

Christy is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) in Schnecksville, PA. She earned her M.S. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Delaware. Christy was accepted to Cohort 8 of Project ACCCESS in 2011. Once her official involvement in the initiative ended, she helped facilitate sessions for Cohorts 10 through 13. She wrote an article for the AMATYC news about the benefits of Project ACCCESS as well as gave a presentation about Project ACCCESS at the AMATYC conference that was held in Anaheim in 2013. Christy is very interested in how technology and apps can be used in the classroom.

Program Assistant
Tammy Louie
Portland Community College

Tammy has spent the last twelve years teaching in beautiful rain-soaked Portland, Oregon at Portland Community College and been involved in AMATYC since being an ACCCESS Fellow in 2011-2013. She earned a MST (Master's in Science and Teaching) from Portland State University and BS (Mathematics) from the University of Oregon. Professional interests include discovery-based student learning, encouraging positive study behaviors and increasing accessibility to a broad student population. Personal interests include surfing, yoga inversions and cheering for the Oregon Ducks.

Project Assistant
Maureen Maikner
Lehigh Carbon Community College

Maureen has worked at Lehigh Carbon Community College for 5 years. Three years full time and 2 years adjunct. Her focus is developmental, statistics, and pre-service education. While not teaching, she enjoys competing in swimming, running, coaching a swim team, and writing.

Barbra Steinhurst
Portland Community College

Since being a Cohort 2 ACCCESS Fellow, family life has led Barbra through a series of part-time, temporary teaching gigs at many colleges in many states. Her time in ACCCESS inspired her to continue sending herself to AMATYC conferences, even when she was between teaching gigs. While underemployed, she pursues her childhood dream of becoming a “Rennaisance [Wo]man” and perpetual student. She attempted to start a brand new community college, led a non-profit to increase access to postsecondary education, developed and led a program to support engineering students from underresourced high schools and underrepresented backgrounds, taken classes for and passed the CPA exam (though she isn’t actually licensed), worked as a school’s finance manager, earned her MBA, and she is now learning Spanish. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her spouse and daughter and is ecstatic to teach community college students regularly again.

Matthew Pragel
Harrisburg Area Community College

Matthew is the Chair of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. He is a past-president of the Pennsylvania State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges as well as a Project ACCCESS Cohort 9 fellow.

 Amber Rust
Anne Arundel Community College

Amber Rust began her career as a United States Air Force Officer after earning a BS in Mathematics from Louisiana Tech University.  Once she fulfilled her commitment to the military she returned to school to earn a MS in Actuarial Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She earned a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction for Mathematics Education at the University of Maryland-College Park on a Mid-Atlantic Center for Mathematics Teaching and Learning fellowship.  Once she finished her PhD program she accepted a position with Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, MD. She actively blends reading strategies into her lessons and for assessment purposes.  Her research interests are reading and literacy issues in mathematics.
